SS CJ Hinojosa was selected in the 26th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Houston Astros, ranked the 32nd best prospect in the nation by Perfect Game, and the 4th best prospect in Texas, making him the highest ranked prospect entering the Big 12 next season. A 2012 Rawlings Preseason All-American, Hinojosa batted .405 with 38 runs, 45 hits, 9 doubles, 2 triples, 16 home runs, and 12 stolen bases as a junior in 2011. CJ was also selected to West Roster for the 2011 Perfect Game All American Classic, an event that features the best prep stars from across the country, CJ was just one of five athletes from the state of Texas who participated in that event. Hinojosa was also a member of the 2011 Texas Rangers Area Code Team.
OF Ben Johnson was selected in the 34th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Atlanta Braves. According to Perfect Game he is the second highest ranked incoming position player (State Ranking 14, National Ranking 106) that will be entering the Big 12 next season. He batted .462 with 5 home runs to go with stealing 17 bases in 2012, Ben was also a multi-year starter at QB for Westwood High School. At a recent Perfect Game Pre-Draft Showcase Ben was clocked at a 6.46 60-yard dash, the third fastest time of all participants in the event. Ben along with fellow Longhorn signees Chad Hollingworth and Jeremy Montalbano recently helped Team Texas win the 2012 Heartland Classic in Norman, OK; the event featured teams representing seven states and Team Texas finished with a perfect 8-0 record. Ben was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
RHP Holden Helmink was selected in the 22nd round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Holden was selected 18-4A 1st Team All-District in 2012 while helping Willis High School in Conroe, TX to the 4A State Playoffs.
RHP Chad Hollingsworth was named 2012 19-3A Most Valuable Player in leading Waco Robinson to the 3A State Semi-Finals. Chad was selected 1st Team All-State by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association, he was also a member of the 2011 Texas Rangers Area Code Team.
LHP/OF Ty Culbreth,along with future teammates Chad Hollingswoth and CJ Hinojosa, was included on the 2011 Texas Rangers Area Code Roster. Ty helped lead Bryan High School to the 5A Regional Finals in 2012, in doing so was named a 12-5A First Team All-District honoree as well as selected 2nd Team All-State by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.
LHP Travis Duke finished the 2012 season 6-1 with a 1.56 ERA, 71 K’s, 11 BB’s in 45 IP for Dawson High School in Pearland, TX….that included 4 complete games and 3 shutouts. Travis allowed only 1 Earned Run in 38 innings pitched during district play.
OF Mark Gottsacker hit .406 with 3 HR’s, 18 RBI, 15 SB’s this past season for Highland Park High School in Dallas, TX. He was named the 2012 District 10-4A Most Oustanding Player as well as 2nd Team All-State by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association. Mark was the 87th best draft eligible prospect in Texas (including college & high school) prior to the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft according to Baseball America.
C Jeremy Montalbano was named 19-5A Most Valuable Player in 2012 as well as selected 3rd Team All-State by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association while helping lead Seven Lakes High School out of the Katy School District to a 19-5A District Championship while advancing to the second round of the 5A playoffs before losing to eventual state champion Cy Ranch.
C James Barton hit .562 this past season for Hyde Park Baptist High School in Austin, TX while helping lead the Panthers to the TAPPS 4A State Semi-Finals. James was named TAPPS 4A 1st Team All-State as well as 3rd Team All-Central Texas in 2012, he was also 2nd Team All-State as a Junior in 2011.
INF Ty Marlow led McClennan CC this past season in all major offensive categories (.356, 8 HR, 60 RBI) Ty began his college career at Texas A&M before transfering after the 2011 season. Ty played high school baseball in Giddings, Texas for his father, Mike Marlow, along side current Longhorn & younger brother Brooks. Ty was 1st Team All-State as a Junior and Senior.
OF Weston Hall stole 25 bases out of 26 attempts in 2012 while starting in CF for Navarro College, he was named 2012 Region XIV East All-Conference 2nd Team.
UTL Madison Carter lead Grayson County College in 2012 with a .380 Batting Average, while compiling 68 hits, 10 doubles, 5 triples, 2 HR’s & 43 RBI to go with a .423 OB% and a .730 SLG%.
INF Codey McElroy was ranked in the Top 100 of draft eligible Junior College prospects prior to the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft according to Perfect Game. Codey lead Eastern Oklahoma State College last season in Runs (47), Walks (33), and was 2nd on the team in HR’s (8)
